Since i made aliyah in 2004, with my late wife, Miriam, you have been filing my U.S. income taxes. All my income has been from Social Security and sales from my portfolio of stocks and bonds held in the U.S.

1. When will I have to pay Israeli income taxes (if ever).
2. What information do you need to determine if it is "less expensive" for my new wife and I to file jointly or to continue to file separately (she is also a widow.)

Thanks

Fabulous article, Hillel. I can't believe we shared an office and never shared our 9/11 stories. I too was living in Manhattan (on the Upper East Side). I had worked until 3 AM the night before getting estimates prepared for 9/15 and so I got a late start that morning. I had the TV on as I was getting ready for work and saw that one of the Twin Towers was engulfed in flames and smoke. My sister worked in one of the buildings and I rushed to call her but couldn't reach her. I called my mother who was also watching the news and as we were on the phone we watched in horror as the second plane hit the second tower. We got off the phone to try to reach my sister. I didn't leave my apartment until I heard from my brother in law that, thank G-D, my sister was OK. Similarly to you, while she was downtown at the time, she had not yet made it to the office. I headed to the subway to get to work, which is normally a place where people keep to themselves. That day everyone was talking about the news. When I got out of the subway and came up at 6th Avenue (at the office of PricewaterhouseCoopers), I could see straight downtown to the Twin Towers, both engulfed in clouds of smoke. I wondered how they would ever repair the damage. Sitting at my desk, I heard that one and then the other tower collapsed. I just couldn't believe it. I cried along with my colleagues in the office for all the lives that were lost.
