What Is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS to people who need to file U.S. taxes but aren’t eligible for a Social Security Number.

For example, nonresident aliensand spouses or dependents of U.S. citizens may need an ITIN to remain compliant with federal tax law. While the ITIN number helps the IRS process returns, it doesn’t change immigration status or provide Social Security benefits.

Why the IRS Created ITINs

The IRS established the ITIN program to ensure everyone with a U.S. tax obligation could report and pay taxes. This way, taxpayers who don’t qualify for an SSN can still file returns and claim credits.

Who Needs an ITIN?

Several groups of people may require an ITIN. Common examples include:

  • Nonresident aliens with U.S.-source income.
  • Resident aliens who meet the substantial presence test but don’t qualify for an SSN.
  • Spouses or dependents of U.S. citizens or residents who aren’t eligible for an SSN.

Understanding whether you fall into one of these categories is the first step to staying compliant. If you are eligible for a Social Security Number, you should not apply for an ITIN.

How to Apply or Renew

Applying for an ITIN begins by submitting Form W-7* along with proof of identity and foreign status. In most cases, you’ll also attach a federal tax return. Applications can be filed by mail, at IRS assistance centers, or through certified acceptance agents.

ITINs expire if they are not used for three consecutive years. When this happens, taxpayers must file a renewal request before the next return can be processed.

Why It Matters for Israelis in the USA

For Israelis with U.S. tax ties, an ITIN can be essential. It allows you to file returns, claim credits, and meet your U.S. filing requirements.
